WHAT IS HAIRCHAR?
Using a unique pyrolysis system – a system for heating with little to no oxygen – Break it Down creates a nitrogen-rich charcoal powder for houseplants and gardens from hair collected at local hair salons and dog groomers. We call this charcoal powder Hairchar.
Hairchar serves as a slow-release, nitrogen-rich soil amendment for both houseplants and gardens, all while diverting cut hair from landfills. It’s a win-win solution!
One bag of ROOTS Hairchar provides enough slow-release Nitrogen for 6-7 medium-sized houseplants annually, or 25 sq ft of garden or lawn quarterly.
Apply 2 heaping TBSP to most houseplants, avoiding cacti or succulents, or spread evenly across your garden or lawn. Have your soil tested for best results and then apply additional hairchar and other nutrients as needed.

Break it Down offers custom daily, weekly, or monthly pick-ups of cut hair. We provide a 64-gallon bin (seen here) that sits perfectly in your business’s waste area. Once full we collect the hair and swap out your cart for a new clean one. It’s just that easy.
We then take the collected hair and turn it into Hairchar – a slow-release, nitrogen-rich biochar product for houseplants and gardens.
